The Newolden Child

The New-older is a mixling born of the mating of the Elder Wisdom of ancient paganism and the New Wisdom of ecological science, which the ancients regrettably lacked.

So the New-olden Child is then a neophyte with an old soul, and as such he is the ambassador of a New World scarcely imaginable to the present-day global citizenry, so far are they from what must be. He is a changeling in their midst and they do not see him, see his differentness, but some day they will.

For now, his coming is seen in the transformation of those who possess the freedom and openness of a neophyte brain-mind, who see that the ecological catastrophe eroding the Biosphere is the greatest and most terrible event in the history of the human species, and that not to fully engage with its causes is the most damnable and dastardly refutation of the ideal of human worth.

Know that within their burgeoning hybrid brain-minds these strange New-olders are forging a new-old consciousness far beyond what those embedded in the modern humanist civilization can approach. And the forming of their noble, dedicated minds and the coalescence of their lives into a world-historical event is the coming-of-age story of the New-olden Child. Who is named Neorxna.

The Ward-wheel

The Ward-wheel is a rune-takn belike to a wheel with eight spokes that are leafy twigs out of a hub of cross-cut stock showing the light heartwood within the bark; the rim, then, is of the hedge of leaves.

This takn (symbol) makes a maegisch targ-shield which wards the Deep Mind from the forwyrfting saurgoth (corrupting pollution) off the Searuvel (Evil Machine), though bodied in the cunning allure of its skrurking (falsifying) Screen-world, and in its thrackly (violent) ugliness and unedhliness (unnaturalness).

The ward-wheel is a gewaldful (powerful) tover (charm) against the evil of the Searuvel.

Umbodes

Those Wights who are blended of Man and of other Life-kinds (species), as are the Drygand, the Shaggy Alfar, and the Twayne, are Umbodes (agents) of Midhlan, Sam-leodhe, and Heolor (mediation, harmony, and balance) between Man and Edhli (Biosphere). They are needed in a World where Man is split-off from the Edhli in his Life-ways, and in his Inner Mind. They are the Hope in a World falling to Dilgoth (annihilation) in the War of Man against the Kinren (life-kinds) of the Edhli. Join them!

The Twayne: the Trewita and the Saeder

Bill is short for Old English 'bilewit'. In Old Irish, 'bile' means 'sacred tree', which would fit Bill's somewhat treeish nature. Conceivably, bilewit could originally have meant 'Sage (or perhaps Vaette) of the Sacred Tree', since 'wit' could be a stream-lined 'wita'(sage) or 'wiht'(wight/vaette). Bill is called a Trewita (~druid), which means 'tree-sage".

Will, on the other hand, is called a Saeder (OE 'seeder'), a seed-sower, or caster of spells, as in siden/seidhr-- oh, and maybe satyr, all of which certainly fit his profile of 'maker of wild magic'.

Bilewit= innocent, simple, sincere, gentle, gracious.

Vaette (ON)= a spirit of place, as in land-vaettr (land-wight).

Kenning, Telling, Menning: the Three-footed Ring-run

(word-help below)

What we ken, we ken in the wonisch ways of our Menning.

And the Wise see in it the Kenning that is like a frame-work that bears it.

And in the Deep Mind a shape to this is given, a Telling, from the Heort, that holds one's Inner Life orgyten in a wondrous Sagen-byzen.

And in the busy Outer Mind a shape to this is given, a Menning that bears this Telling, orgyten in the Living World around us where we must make our way amongst all the Kinren, without harming them.

And in the Deep Mind the Menning shapes what we ken.

And so the ring of three is run: Kenning, to Telling, to Menning, and back about.

ken= to recognise, know: to procreate. Kenning= knowledge, teaching.

wonisch= accustomed.

Telling= to express; an expression.

Will and Bill

(word-help below)

The Twayne are called Will and Bill; Will short for Wilder-- wild animal-- which he seems like at times, and Bill short for Bilewit, as he tends towards bilewitness. Which shows there is an otherness in kind between them-- but in a pinch, each can become as like to the other as makes no mind, as they are Twayne.

Elemental Beings

The Wolken is like the humid atmosphere, as it is a cloud of being covering the Earth. Its nature is to ever reach out of its formless potential as does a writhing cloud makes shapes.

The Drygand is like water that fluidly fits to any shape that it encounters, as he shape-shifts to fit the circumstance. His nature is manifest-form to fit external requirements.

Man is like fire, which in Nature is a rare, accidental occurrence that consumes all before it. Man's nature is to burn with light and heat, to billow, flicker, and leap like ever-forming flames, and to leave char and ash behind.

The other living species are like stones which have been shaped by the elements, as the species have been shaped by natural selection-- and are now being shaped as well by human selection.

The Alfar are like air and water and fire and stone, having the nature of the Wolken, of the Drygand, of Man, and of the species that form the integrated Web of Life. All these elements are in the Alfar mixed in just proportion to make a new creature that fits salubriously within the whole Web, as within the array of elements.

The Byzener of the Menning

(word-help at end)

Deep in the endless Cloud-mind of the great Wolken, the Byzener blidhely weaves the Shape of the new Menning, evenso as it is woven in the minds of men who walk the Eorth.

Of many threads is woven this knot-work, to make a Tover-targ.

The Byzener, in the greening way, weaves this thwarly Maze-web that holds the Menning in its setness.

And it is so made that this Targ-byzen fairly fits to the Edhli-web in a bind-weave, so that men may live in the Greening Way, without harm to Helg-Edhli.

And so shall it be.

The Cherrenge

(word-help below)

The Billywit, as he is simple, mild, and kindly, readily takes-in the Drygand's Siden, clean through to the marrow, where it dwells and works a cherrenge. The nerve-marrow inside the skull and backbone becomes the Ram-headed Snake, which also hight the Drygand-Within. And in the brain-marrow the Lodestone does grow. And from the marrow of the many bones grows-out a glassy new flesh within the old, to a shining Body of Light, as from the bones-out bilds the Edhli-mensch, the new man of the Edhli-menning, who is thane to the Drygand, hight then, Drygand-Alf, who now dwells in this wondrous Body that is open to all the Edhli.

The Deepster as a Guide

One of the things that Deep Ecology is about is to work for sibbship (a peaceful relationship) with the Edhli (Biosphere) and the Wolken, its being-mind.

One of the things a Deepster does is to try to help others toward such sibbship. As he's a Drygand-alf, and so the Lodestone dwells within his brain-marrow, one of his wealds (powers) is Alf-siden (alfisch influence on others). So he may be able to draw others into the Otherworld, there to find an opening to the Wolken. Or he may draw them into the Twyrymet, where Otherworld and Edhli meld, so that for them the World becomes drenched in maegisch-mistryne (magical-mystery). Or he may use his siden as allure, so that he is beheld himself as the Drygand (avatar of the Wolken), and can speak straight into their minds, to start the Lodestone growing there.

And all of this is done to help others find right sibbship with the Edhli and Wolken, to draw them into the brotherhood of Drygand-alfs, perhaps to become themselves a Deepster, or even an Alf-kynecht (Edhli-warrior), all for the sake of saving the Edhli from the Dilgoth (the Extinction Event).

This is the adhel (noble) work of the Deepster.

The Three Stages of Civilization

The ethos of the first stage is a naive, fuzzy-minded Monism (=holism) which is metaphorical and mythic and superstitious. It seeks stability, balance, and harmony.

The ethos of the second stage is a sophisticated, sharp-minded Dualism which is literalistic and rationalizing and nihilistic. It seeks progress and power.

These two stages are often found together in some kind of hybrid proportion.

The ethos of the third stage is a sophisticated, subtle-minded Monism of Ecology, which seeks an optimal, balanced relationship between the elements of the two earlier stages with preservation of the Ecosphere the guiding principle. Such a civilization is called the Edhli-menning.

The Three Rynisch Wealds of the Ferth

(word-meanings at end)

The Sowel is like a dark sun within, that seats in the deep marrow, the ground of being and feeling. The Sowel heats the Innoth, seeps its warmth to all the nooks within, and is seen only as it sets things alight in the inner dark, which then glow in rich hues. The Sowel makes the Ferth to glow with warmth and farben of feeling-being.

Guyst is like the crackling one feels before a spark shoots forth. It is tingling nenning, sharp and light. It crackles, flickers, runs-through, fills one. And it can come into one from without, from the luft or the ground, or from within, spreading or shooting.

Samen is the shining mist, the glowing life-flowoth that enlivens, and begets life. Its cool flow streams, roils, drenches the whole Life-world, and it builds in the Ferth, it bathes the Innoth and feeds the means of growth.

Troth to Edhlifrith!

(word-meanings at end)

Edhlifrith is the mynt of the Wolken: to seek heolorth and stadhol of the Web of Life woven of the Three Kingdoms of Wyrtcynren, Dyrcynren, and Rotcynren.

As the Wolken has grown in knowledge and wisdom, it has seen the threat of Gumenn to the Verden. And so the Drygand was made strong and cunning and sent to range the lands and waters, watching for harm wreaked by Guman Wargs and Args upon the Webwork. And where he could he fought this, with the help of the Alfar, those Frith-keepers, Loden-kynechts, who well know their lands and waters.

And in our time, as the threat to our Green Verden has grown, and much of our Klode has become Wasteland, and the more likely that our Erkan Edhli will fall, it is ever more of need that worthy Menschen heed the Alf-call, and rise to Alfhad to fight these Earth-forraeders who hold no troth to the Holy Verden that has borne and bears them, and to make a New Menning for Mankind that will let the Edhli wyrdhe its way unharmed and free. Troth to Edhlifrith!

Regeneration of the Bones

In primitive times, hunters would save the bones of their prey, and plant them respectfully in the earth so that new animals would be grown from them, magically, ensuring a continuing supply of game.

Similarly, in shamanic cultures, which were of hunters or herders, at least originally, there was the mythic notion that the young shaman-to-be must be devoured, stripped of his flesh, stripped to the bones, and from these marrow-bones, a new body regrows, of shamanic substance-- crystalline, clear and shining. It is a rebirth, with a new "body of light", as a new-fledged shaman in a new world.

This myth of regrowth from the bones, in its many cultural evolutions, was widespread in the ancient world. A good, smallish book about it is Weston La Barre's Muelos: a Stone Age Superstition about Sexuality.

Recently, it occurred to me that the Romantic Movement could be seen as involving a stripping of the flesh-- a rejection of the elite, high civilization of the Enlightenment characterized by order, reason, high-flown manners, and refinement, to go back to a lower level, of the simple common-folk, with their traditional ways and wisdom, which by contrast with the artificial elaborations of the Enlightenment was like the bones of civilization-- stark, simple, yet authentic, honest, vital, even magical. And many of the Romantics could be said to be trying to regrow a new (organic!) body of civilization from this archaic stock, and get it right this time. Well, the results were a mix of the wonderful and terrible, and we're still living with them.

Now, if we see that we are, perforce, in the Age of Ecology, in which the current global civilization is obviously destroying Life on Earth, and that fundamental changes are required if there is to be any hope that an intact Biosphere and some kind of human presence will survive, then it is very like the situation at the end of the 18th century, with the Enlightenment and the Romantic Movement in opposition. In fact, our global civilization is a direct development of the Enlightenment civilization, two centuries on, as the Ecology Movement is of the Romantic Movement-- only now the stakes are drastically higher.

And I see this powerful myth of the regrowth of a new, superior body from the bones of the old one to fit our present situation, just as with the old Romantic Movement. Now we must develop-- regrow-- a new global civilization-- and it must be global, because the Biosphere is global, and not ethno-centric/nationalist like with the Romantic Movement-- and the determining, driving idea, the "marrow" of it, must be Ecology-- that is, how we can live on this planet without destroying it. It is a very simple idea, easy to see its truth, that therefore we must make a new ecological civilization, and we must get it right, which requires that we use whatever will be necessary and reject whatever is a hindrance, or harmful, which means using our intelligence, knowledge, and science as well as inspiration, intuition, and old wisdom-- everything we can bring to this terrific Work, but all with great discrimination, so that we get it right.

Taken

In folklore, the Elves take a normal baby and leave a changeling in its stead. This is noticed when the child turns-out to be strange-- withdrawn, addled, fey, or otherwise undesirable.

This is typical of Humans-- they get it wrong. Why would the Elves want normal babies? In fact, the baby is not exchanged, but changed by the mysterious "elvish influence", from Human to Elf, which makes it an alien among Humans, so of course it doesn't seem like everyone else. And the change isn't necessarily made all at once, to a baby in a cradle. Often, nothing is noticeably strange until the onset of puberty, when there is suddenly much more to influence. But influence can be effective into the mature years-- that "mid-life crisis"?

And where it used to be "taken by the Elves", it has become "taken by Aliens", which is just Humans updating their wrongness-- in the world of nuclear warfare and all the other wonders of science and technology, natural beings like Elves no longer signify, but futuristic space-craft carrying humanoids do, so...

But as in the olden days, most of those "taken" are just confused people and/or liars. In reality, those benefiting from elvish influence keep that to themselves, and since no-one believes in Elves anymore, no one sees an Elf-changeling; instead, it's a person with autism or some other modern syndrome. However, changelings can spot each other pretty readily, and they often make their true identity obvious to their fellows in various improvised ways. The thing is-- many changelings don't know what they are, from how they are, if they haven't been told, but they know it's something, and they're on the look-out for others like themselves.

So, if you haven't been told, I'll tell you here-- yes, you are probably an Elf-changeling, and even if, strictly speaking, you are not, it doesn't matter-- if you are elvish, you are, to all intents and purposes, an Elf. But it's not so much a matter of identity-- ultimately, elvish is as elvish does, and, to some extent, you can choose elvishness. In fact, you must choose it, and work at it, because, surrounded by Humans and the world they have made, you are heavily influenced (corrupted) by them. And until you have become well and truly an Elf, it can be a hard road for you to travel. Sooner or later, though, you encounter others of your sort-- not always the blessing it might seem, so take care-- there are Elves and Elves (and faked Elves). But don't go traumatic-- trust yourself. Remember-- self-possessed self-reliance will get you through most things, generally. You need to get your direction from within-- the outer stuff will sort itself out with a little applied intelligence. As an Elf, you are an agent of change, perhaps a secret agent. Though you may in time fall-in with other Elves, you will never be a herd-animal, and much relies on your inner access to things that the Herd knows nothing about-- so you had better get down to that, before anything else, and you'll be fine. And someday, you yourself will have developed the inner substance which can influence those you come upon with themselves a latent bent toward elvishness, helping them along.

Until then, fellow, Go Deep! And use what you have brought back from there to work in the real world for the coming of the Edhli-menning!

Intimations of Ancient Being

I was a spaced-out child, rather stupid and day-dreamy. I would go about in my personal dream-haze, drawn to things of the imagination, feeling-images, strange states of mind. I'm sure that my memories are selective, but what I remember now, half a century on, are these perceptions alternate to reality, and mostly I remember those relating to Nature. Is it that I was conditioned to respond to Nature in terms of Nature-romanticism? There was enough of that around, in children's literature, children's television programming. The first movie I ever saw was Bambi! But I probably had a bent toward this, and not much to cars and jets and sports and such, despite that being normal. Nature was where the wonder was. We were surrounded by woods, in our small apartment development, and there was also a meadow and stream. People, by contrast, were alien, incomprehensible-- what could you do with them? The meaning of life came from dream-visions, that were elicited by television, or books, or just day-dreaming, and when the season was favorable, by being outside with trees and grass and sky. And it all blended together.

When adolescence changed my life, the "strangeness factor" came to the fore. I was drawn to almost everything that was uncanny, mysterious, odd-- in short, Romantic. I knew I was a weird kid; I even took pride in it. But there was so much that was strange about, if you looked for it-- especially in certain stretches of the public library shelves-- and it all blended not very well, and so there was tremendous teenaged cognitive dissonance confusion, to add to all the other traumas, one of which was from being a teenager in the Sixties, when too much was happening at once, too much to make sense of it all.

But Nature still loomed large in my inner life, and I still spent a lot of time wandering in the woods, or day-dreaming on my bed, remembering places, some of which I had never been. One of the great appeals of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings was all the description of wild places-- in my romantic imagination transformed into otherworldly panoramas, with the sort of mystical states of mind illuminating them as when I was a child. I wanted to live in Middle Earth-- at least, the nicer parts of this Other World. This was where the meaning of life was, in these dream-visions. If only I could stay in this blessed state forever.

One thing about Middle Earth was that it was so ancient. Ancientness, or timelessness, was an important part of the meaning. I can remember on a family vacation trip when we drove through a very rugged upland valley, and the trees were so real, and the rough rock-faces were so stark, and I got this powerful feeling of timeless gnarly ancientness, primeval majesty. And now I recall other times, while vacation-traveling, having similar experiences, or in bed-top reveries. There was a powerful mystical presence in wild Nature that you could experience sometimes, more real and meaningful than anything else. Nobody else seemed to know anything about it. All they cared about was human things like cars and houses and shopping, and entertaining yourself, having a good time.

But I wonder if there was a time when everybody had these intimations of ancient Being from Nature, a strong sense of the unique essence of particular nature-spots, of the ancient everness of them. And because few of us do, anymore-- we're so adapted to incessant flux and distraction and innovation and novelty and upgrading and stuff to cram our lives with-- we blithely, heedlessly destroy the Earth so we can have the good life for ourselves-- cars and houses and shopping and all the goods and experiences that make life worthwhile, that you've got to have-- what life is all about. So they say.

But give me the mystical-visionary experience of Ancient Being and Natural Mind in unspoiled Nature, not the ersatz monstrosity that passes for real life in the human world.

The Role of the Alfs

There's an Anglo-Saxon word, "aelf-siden", which means "elvish influence". Under Christendom, elves tended to be feared. They certainly weren't Christian (and, so, of the Devil, right?). They attacked cattle and people with "elf-shot", which caused afflictions, and they were also responsible for nightmares (even of a sexual sort--"It was an elf, Father! Not me!!!"). And of course elves could always cast a glamour or a spell upon one for malign purposes. That sort of influence, then.

The interesting thing about "siden", though, is that the dictionaries don't say what it derived from. I tended to think it was allied to Norse "seidhr" (~A-S "sidesa"), which was about exerting magical influence on others. But now I prefer to see it as allied as well to A-S "sidu" ="custom, virtuous conduct, morality", "sidian" ="to arrange, set right, order", and Norse "sidha" ="to mend, to improve one's life and manners".

In the Shaggy Mythos, the role of the Alfs is as ecological agents of a higher level of civilization than that of the general run of humans, and as such they seek to use their influence, by all means, magical or not, to stop humans from destroying the Biosphere and to form (with alfisch assistance, of course) a new Ecological Civilization, which is the only recourse to ultimate Dilgoth, an extinction event that's likely to bring down our present global civilization, and the human animal perhaps to its doom, and to either make the Earth a sterile husk or knock the Biosphere back to a drastically truncated form. This may seem like fantasy fiction sometimes ("This can't be real!"), but it is real, and the Mythos is a "real" fiction-- it's meant to be about the real crisis of global civilization now-- the human-caused destruction of the Biosphere-- which is happening now and will continue to happen. So the Mythos isn't meant to be taken as a mere fantasy, an entertainment. It's applicable to the grim reality of our time.

And as for Alfs, there must be a self-conscious, worldwide class of people who are, in effect, the Alfar, with the consciousness, the sense of responsibility, the determined will to act against the Ecocatastrophe and to form the Ecological Civilization in a prudent and effective manner. Someone must. This class of people exists already, of course, and their movement exists, and when you read the Eormennisch material of the Shaggy Mythos, you can do your own translation into real-world terms (with a little glossary help). If you are one of these people, these Alfar, then the Mythos is meant to be of use to you, as a spiritual support, as it is to me, in the struggle to save the Earth.

The Wodhewyzer

(word-help below)

The Wodhewyzer wanders through the Land, having of it what it gives to him, what comes, to see and hear and smell and taste and feel. And this settles in his mind and in his marrow and brews a mead that seeps through his flesh and wants to go forth to drench the Land and all its kinds, and it sweats out and breathes out and as the Wodhewyzer walks, he sheds this drench, this bletsing, and with his fingers he flicks a mist of mead upon the luft, and the ground and the leafage, and all about him shines with the farben of Twyrymet. And there can be read many things that come not freely to the mind, like the mode and will of the Land-dragon, who shimmers half-seen in the bush, and the feelings of the kinds- growers and goers upon the Land. And he hears the song of the Land, so still on the luft.

And this is what the Wodhewyzer gives back to the Land. And in his wake you may catch slightly a trace of this shine about you, if you walk his way.

Wodhewyzer= inspired sage.
kinds= species.
drench= fluid.
bletsing= blessing.
luft= air.
farben= colors.
Twyrymet= space blended of Edhli(Nature) and Immynd(imagination)= Edhli-immynd.
mode= inner feeling of heart, soul, spirit.

What Lurks Within the Earthy Sowel

(word-help below)

The Sowel seats in the Marrow-bed, most strongly in the rich ground of the Brain-marrow.

The Sowel is the Ur-mind, and so it is feelsome and fleshly, the fat rootstock of the Self.

In its heavy, warm, dark depth is our Derlic Self and our nearness to all Life, all growthly things, now and ere-now.

All things are melded in the Sowel, but not lost so, for there is a guiding knowing embedded in its heart that keeps them all fast, and it handles them together as is done, for it is one with the Edhli-verden. And so the need of all living things together is heard by this heartsome beingness.

It is the Lodestone here of which I tell, whose guiding hand upon the Sowel is felt by us betimes, and if we listen in stillness, we too will feel, we will know, how to be, how to go. And so the Life-drang will urge us forward and the Nennen charge us, and we can do good and right for the Sake of Edhli and all Life-kinds from our earthy Sowel.

Sowel= soul.

Ur-mind= original psyche.

Derlic= animal.

Edhli-verden= the Realm of Nature.

Life-drang= life-force.

Nennen= energy.

Lodhinn Alfhedhinn and Geordhe Grene: The Twayne

You have read of the Twayne in the story of the finding of the Lodestone in the midst of the Deep and the giving of it to the Drygand, and of how they then became Halleths, Alf-kynechts in dienst to the Drygand. Here is more...

Lodhinn Alfhedhinn's name means "Shaggy Alf-coat"-- he is rather hairy. Geordhe Grene's name means "Green Earth". The two men are different to each other but also complementary, and so they stick together, which keeps them from becoming too different.

Lodhinn is lithe and quick, clever and intense, like a ferret, and a sort of cunning-man. His hair is reddish but dark. He is often away on mysterious business. He makes people nervous. Some call him Wild Man, and his special day is said to be Yule.

Geordhe is tree-ish: thickly made, with thick, wavy blond locks, a squarish calm face, and a measured bearing. People come to him expecting wise counsel, and he often officiates at rites, with a wreath upon his head, like a trewita. He is called Green Man. His special day is Litha.

Deep Ecologists and Eco-druids

One role of the ancient Druids was to be upholders of the Sacred (Halidom). If you accept Ecology (Edhlifrith) as the foundation (godhead) of any viable future culture-civilization (Edhli-menning), then an Eco-druid would be an upholder of the ecological sacred. The Edhlifridhas (Eco-warriors) would be enforcers of it, but the Trewitas (Eco-druids) would be the spiritual guardians, by their spiritual and juridical authority maintaining the Wih-band (boundary-framing) between the Sacred and the not-sacred in the culture. And the term Deep Ecologist applies to both of these roles, I think.

Ecological Romanticism

****the following is something like a manifesto. try it on.****

A biological godhead is the answer to the devouring vacuum of light and energy-- a white hole-- that science gives us, in which everything dissolves into an incandescent blaze of 'too much information'-- the existential state that has come to dominate since World War II. It is in this state that ecocatastrophe expands boundlessly.

Ecology is the necessary god-idea of our time and henceforth-- necessary because of the failure of the human species to commit itself to saving the Biosphere from humanity. Ecology is the touchstone, the foundational idea of any legitimate civilization.

Ecology-as-godhead is radically polymorphous and global-- as with the Vacuum, but with the difference that it represents the Life-organism that has evolved for billions of years on Earth, while the Vacuum has broken with it, forming a murderous machinery that can only destroy the Life-organism.

Ecological Romanticism connects the inner mythic realm of the spiritual imagination with the outer, scientific reality of all living organisms forming a whole. It is a coordination of Romanticism and Biology. It is the rich romance of Life fighting for survival against a lethal evolutionary development that threatens the whole, by using the full vitality and constitution of the human psyche toward the rescue of Life.

Nature is sacred. Ecological security is a sacred directive. Ecological Romanticism is a means to fight the threat.

****This is very different from what I usually write. It's a sort of foray in a tangential direction. It isn't a completely rational statement and I'm groping for coherence but not quite reaching it. But it's substantial, and has a useful effect, I think. It's a step toward something, which I hope I can discover.****

Same-haming the Drygand

(word-meanings to follow)

When the Twayne brought the Lodestone to the Drygand and then gave it to him, the Stone came into him and he became the mighty Halleth of the Edhli, to ward it and ernern it from the Dilgoth. The Twayne then were made the first of his kynechts, and in time, many of the Alfar became his Alf-kynechts, thanes in dienst to the Edhli, having sworn troth to the Sake of Edhli-frith and showed by their deeds this troth.

When an Alf swears his troth before the Drygand, he gets from him the Lodestone, in a drench of grene-fyre. And the Stone then comes to sit in his marrow, and the Edhli-wisdom of the Wolken and the Forn-wields of the Drygand flow from the Stone and come to fill him. And a token of this inner Cherrenge is seen in the Drygand-hame that shows as fur or feather or scale over him, at some times, foremostly while one is in the Twyrymet. And this is called "same-haming the Drygand", as the Drygand can look like any living thing or blend of them.

To have the Drygand-hame shows that one has taken to himself the Lodestone and sworn the Troth and become a true Alf and halleth. This does not mean that one has tamed the Drygand and taken to oneself thereby his wields, but instead that one has been taken by the Drygand as his own kynecht, but a free kynecht, a thane, not tamed by him either, but rather hamed by him.

hame= what covers the skin.

Drygand= the pan-chimaera.

halleth= holy warrior.

Edhli= the Biosphere.

ernern= rescue.

Dilgoth= the Extinction Event.

kynecht= knight.

dienst= service.

the Sake of Edhli-frith= the Ecology Movement.

Wolken= the Edhli-mind which hames the Earth.

Forn-wields= ancient powers.

Cherrenge= the conversion.

Twyrymet= where Edhli and Immynd (imagination) blend.

The Wealddom of Edhli

...or, The Sovereignty of the Biosphere.

The Edhli is stably self-regulating, and does this the best it can be done. Humans usurp its sovereignty, however, and create ecocatastrophe, damaging the entire life-system of Earth and driving its natural cycles into extreme states of fluctuation and collapse.

The human species must recognize its usurpation and return sovereignty to the Edhli, of course. In a sane planetary civilization, government would be an agent acting on behalf of the whole Edhli. When government is not the champion of the Edhli, then its legitimacy would be forfeit.

A New Iconic Image

I'm always impatient with intellectual discourse, it leaves me cold, and when I attempt to construct one, it doesn't feel authentic. It's just not my kind of thing. Yes, I like to determine which ideas and formulas are valid, and useful, and which are not, but I'm a romantic, and so I like to numenize them, make them into potent symbols, images, slogans, full of magic, mystery, mysticism. My mind generates these readily, whereas discursive writing is laborious, and impossible if I don't feel it, but writing either goes or it doesn't, while making a decent drawing of an image, and from that into a finished object for display, well, that's torture, and takes forever. But here, I will write about an image-- though some day, I'll probably make a display-object of it-- I'll add it to the list of images to process.

Recently, it came to me to put the man-figure which the German Romantic artist Fidus used to symbolize Man as the conveyer of cosmic Geist (vital spirit-energy), inside the ecology symbol (eco-logo, Edhlifrith takn or bind-ring). This man-figure, which I described in "The Drygand as a Tree", now would represent the Drygand, or anyone like him, upholding the Edhli-- the Biosphere-- on the one hand, and being joined to it in harmony, on the other, this being the necessary, ideal relationship of Man to Nature-- not just 'one with Nature', which notion can easily become 'I am Nature, so I can do whatever is natural to me (i.e., whatever I want), and not 'apart from Nature', like a steward (an external manager), but rather a subtle relationship with Nature which includes both our naturalness, and also our alienness, those aspects of us that make us very dangerous to Nature. In short, of a monster who turns his powers to good purpose, which is the best we can do, and not easy of accomplishment.

Unfortunately, as long as we exist, we will be monsters capable of ultimate evil, and yet also of great good. Time will reveal whether the good in us can stably control the evil in us, our power over Nature. We need to go all-out and see if we can do this, instead of, like many do, just give up before we've even tried our darndest. This is the Age of Ecology we're living in, after all-- 40 A. E. now-- and that is what is required of us, to organize as a species to save this planet from our monstrous selves. This, then, is the reality-movie of our time, and we must not be merely spectators and critics of it, but its academy award-winning performers-- or vanish forthwith from the screen forever! A great movie with a happy ending, or the death of cinema? It's up to us!

The Trewita

Trewita means 'druid' in Eormennisch: 'wita' meaning 'wise man', and 'trew' meaning 'true' and 'tree', both of which are applicable since the Trewita is both a true man and, as such, like a tree, as he is grounded in the earth, by which we mean the Edhli (Biosphere), while he reaches up into the sky, by which we mean the Immynd (Imagination). He dwells in the heolor (balance) of Edhli and Immynd which is called the Twyrymet (dual reality). And so he does not live unrooted as most all humans do, heedless of the primacy of the Edhli and of their responsibility to keep it whole and safe, who live in an unnatural world where their minds run mad, unmoored from their true nature, leading them to harm the living world that created them and on which they depend for life no matter how they try to go beyond it, live apart from it.

But the Trewita's mind is bound to the Edhli and so for him the Edhli-immynd drenches all the world, investing it with magisch rynedom (magical mystery), which is the birthright of the human animal, but which civilized man lives without, knowing not what he is missing.

Civilized man, no matter the wealth he thinks he has, is impoverished, and in his mad blindness he destroys the rich Living World which is his true reality, thereby growing madder and madder without experience or knowledge of it, until he destroys himself in his madness.

But the Trewita sees life as it is and knows his true nature, as much as can be known by man. And because of this, he is good, and works good.

The Coming of the Edhli-menning

(glossary follows text)

Certain menschen there were who saw Dilgoth approaching as the Searuvel began to spread over the entire Earth, devouring the wild Edhli to make itself ever mightier so as to grow ever faster. These Edhli-menschen did not know it, but they were at the forefront of the evolution of the Edhli-mind, the Wolken, which had become ever more intelligent and complex from the beginnings of Life. But with the evolution of Man, it had grown ever faster. And but now, the twisted machine-animal mind of the Searuvel threatened the self-evolution of Life on Earth, and even Life itself if the full Dilgoth occurred. The Edhli-menschen, influenced by the Wolken, rapidly evolved, themselves, into the Alfar, and the idea of an ecological civilization, the Edhli-menning, began to form among them as the response to the Searuvel civilization of the West that had become global. And as well, within the Wolken, the Lodestone formed as a powerful agent of transformation and guidance to come to seat at the center of each Alf-mensch and drive the coming of the Edhli-menning to re-cover the Earth and devour the Searuvel as it had devoured the wild Edhli. When the Twayne brought the Lodestone to the Drygand, who is the active aspect of the Wolken, he too was transformed by it, into the great Edhlifridha, protector of the wild Edhli and champion of the Edhli-menning. And he enlisted many of the Alfar to be fellow Kynechts, Halleths in this great Sake to win back the Earth to Edhli-frith. Others of the Alfar, closer by nature to the Wolken, became Menning-bodas, messengers and spokesmen for the new civilization. And the mighty struggle to save the Earth from the terrible evil that had overrun it was waged!

menschen= persons.

the Dilgoth= the current extinction event.

the Searuvel= the evil machine.

the Edhli= living Nature, the Biosphere.

the Wolken= the great Cloud of Being-mind that covers the Earth.

the Alfar= the Nature-romantics.

the Drygand= the primordial Pan-chimaera.

Edhli-frith= Nature-preservation.

kynecht= knight, fighter.

halleth= holy knight.

sake= a contention, cause.

boda= druid, proclaimer, redesman.

The Twayne

(glossary at end)

The Twayne were the first Deepsters. Together they went aseech by long, hard, wendering ways to find the great Madhom. In their fand-faering they found the Depths where the two worlds meet, and there they came at last to the Lodestone. Together they grasped it, and lifted it from its seat at the deepest depth. And there then was a hole where it had been, they had opened a thyrel to the outer world, so that when they had brought the Lodestone back with them, it was always also in its midsted at the heart of things, and so, easier for all who came after to find.

The Twayne brought back this great madhom, and made their way to the Drygand, and gave it to him, and when he had it, he became forwendt by it, and was now the great Halleth of the Edhli. And he made the Twayne to be halleths, kynechts of Edhlifrith, and they are with every Edhlifridha, one at each of his shoulders, as minders and redesmen, so that he be not alone in his drengswork.

aseech= on quest.

madhom= treasure

Lodestone= the revealer of and guide and drover to the Edhlimenning, the ecological civilization.

fand-faering= explorative journeying, questing.

thyrel= a penetration.

Drygand= the Pan-chimaera.

forwend=to transform.

halleth= holy knight(kynecht).

Edhli= living Nature, Biosphere.

Edhlifrith= Nature protection.

Edhlifridha= Nature protector.

redesman= advisor, guide.

drengswork= the practice of chivalry.

Green People and Blue People

Green people live with the living world. They are of the earth.

Blue people try to live over the living world. They are of the sky. They want to live in the heights, to attain the heights of freedom, grandeur, immortality-- and what they find is a vacuum, and to gain the heights, they create insanity and destruction upon the earth.

Green people are called Ecologists. Blue people are called Humanists.

"INGENS!"

Old English ingefolc = 'native race'. Is that in-gefolc or inge-folc? Well, Ing (or hypothetical *Ingwaz) was the taboo name of the Norse fertility god Freyr (which itself means merely 'lord'). 'Ing' means something like 'begetter' or 'begotten' as far as I can tell from its usage in compound words and cognates in various languages-- something to do with reproduction and fertility. But if 'inge-folc' is the proper reading ('gefolc' doesn't make sense, grammatically), it would mean literally 'begotten folk' or 'descendants'-- 'tribe', really, which fits with 'native race'.

It's not inconceivable that ingefolc could become a Middle English 'ingens', with 'g' pronounced like our 'j'. So it would sound like 'injuns', which would be a further 'corruption'. I wonder why North American aboriginal peoples don't call themselves Injuns. I don't sense that it was a derogatory name, but I could be wrong. But if I were of American Indian stock, I would call myself an Injun, apart from my tribal name, of course. And after all, it sounds like a mild corruption of 'indigen', which means 'native race'-- ha! With 'Injun' we avoid the misnomer 'Indian'-- "No, we're not from India!" So, 'Injun' is OK by me.

And about tribes-- 'tribe' is being used very loosely by some people now. But I think a tribe must be essentially 'a long-established group of interbred people', otherwise, it's more like just a subculture or a culture. So, 'tribal'-- it's become a pop-culture term, one of those very vague usages that no one bothers defining; has become, essentially, pop-babble. I've had enough of that air-headed vagueness. Of course, what I do to germanic vocabularies verges on the criminal, so am I one to speak? As far as Anglo-Saxon paganism goes, we have 'theod' (='tribe'), which sounds rather like 'thud'. I suppose one can be 'theodisc' (pronounced '-ish') without actually belonging to a theod back in the Dark Ages ('ish' meaning 'like... sort of'), being looser than 'tribal', which to me, anyway, says 'of a tribe'. Picky! Picky! Picky! Oh well.

By the way, you might have noticed that I don't show how to pronounce my germanic (Eormennish) terminology. I should, in some cases, but the problem is that I'm basically a word-artist, not a linguist, and I spell my word-creations however tastes best at the time; i.e., makes the 'word-magic'. Besides, I'm often hybridizing cognates from different languages, with different systems of pronunciation. And then there's modern English orthography, which is semi-chaotic. So deciding how to pronounce and spell these words is difficult. You should pronounce them however you want, but if you want to know how I would do it, just ask. Usually I go with how you'd spell it in modern English, but sometimes I like the exotic/archaic evocative effect of weird spelling of the original Old Norse or Old English, say.

Again by the way, 'eormen' sounds a bit like 'German', which is a latinate word, not germanic. But that it means 'enormous, great' is why I chose it to name this word-hoard I invent-- as 'Eormanz' (which also means 'romance' in the sense of 'Romantic movement' or 'a medieval romance'-- but not 'l'amour'). The 'z' is a German 'z', pronounced like our 'ts'-- 'yore-mants').

The Wed-bonding of Immynd to Edhli

The Edhli is living Nature. The Immynd is the Imagination, the Otherworld. When the two become wed, the Edhli-immynd then sits enthroned in your Depth. You know this has happened when you feel the thrum of the Lodestone there.

With this wed-bonding, the Two Worlds become the Twyrymet where magic (maegisch) and meaning are found. And you see with the Twysight. You can go beyond human nature (Gumen-cynd) and see things as does the Edhli-mind, the Mind of the Biosphere.

The Ecology Symbol (ecologo/Edhlifrith Takn) shows this holy wedlock of Immynd to Edhli, as a thong fastening both sides, Edhli and Immynd, of the oval ring. The ring is also the Wolken, the meditative aspect of the Edhli-mind, and the thong is the Drygand, the active aspect. So the Edhlifrith Takn signifies not only Ecology, but the Edhli-mind. But also does it signify the Lodestone, and the Lodestone connects you to the Edhli-mind.

Edhli-mind-- Nature-oriented deep imagination.

Lodestone-- the internal guide, warded by the Drygand, the Pan-chimera.

Twyrymet-- 'doubled space'-- the original human experiencing of Nature, where everything is illumined by Deep Mind.

Wolken-- 'cloud, ball'. The Wolken is a vast cloud-ball of the maegisch life-fluid Samen. It is the infinitely complex consciousness and being of the Biosphere.

The Drygand is the Shifter

The Drygand* is the Shifter, and the Wyrdhebora*. With his Siden* he can shift the mind forthward. His Seed-swarm* can drench to the marrow of bone and skull, and once loaded, the Deep Mind there is made anew. And the self becomes the Self, the mind the Edhli-mind*. The Immynd* is yoked to the Edhli-wereld*. And as the Drygand is the Alf-kyning*, one becomes a Drygandalf, a wyrdhebora oneself, in thaneship to the Edhli.

*Drygand= the Pan-chimera, the avatar of the Edhli-mind, bearer of the Lodestone, King of the Alfar, and Guardian of the Edhli. Old English 'dry'= magic (<'druid'?). Old Norse 'gand'= magic thing or being.

*Wyrdhebora= agent of evolution (human).

*Siden= magical power to influence. Old English 'aelfsiden'= elvish influence. (~Old Norse 'seidhr'(?)= a form of magic.)

*Seed-swarm= a swarm or fume of 'samen', the vital fluid. German 'Samen'= seed.

*Edhli-mind= the mind of Living Nature. Old Norse 'edhli'= Nature.

*Immynd= the Imagination. Old Norse 'imyndan'= imagination.

The Drygand as a Tree

Picture a stick figure of a man, with arms spread upward, crooked at the elbow; legs spread, like a mirror image of the arms. The short lines for feet are canted down a bit as if toe-grasping the soil; those for hands canted up as if receiving the sunlight. This is the Drygand, the Pan-chimera. He is like a tree: rooted in the earth, boughs held up to the sky. He is the Tree of Life, the 'tree' of all living things, which in reality is spread over the Earth, in the waters' deeps, and where land meets sky: the Biosphere.

The Deepster

The Deepster is one who has gone Deep.

Deep into the Deepness of Reyndom (reality), where the two reyndoms become One-- the reyndoms of Edhli-orgyte (Nature-manifest) and of the Inner Mind, bemesh and weld-bond.

Which is how it was, and should be. Then the Edhli lives again in the Heort, in the weird light of the Immynd (imagination)-- it is the Twy-rymet (twofold Space) where the Drygand stalks, in the rune-mists of the Wolken (cloud of being) that curl and fold among the life-kinds of the Eormen-walden (vast forest), which is the Life-Trew (world tree) spread round the Eorth.

There is great might and maegisch (magic) in this Inner-Outer, of the Eormen-sule (great soul). It is the Trew-wereld (true/tree), the Twy-rymet of Halor (balance-salvation).

Seek this Deepness, and find it!

We are all caught in the Searuvel (evil machine). From our birth its fingers seep into our growing minds, and grows its meshes in them, and we become thralls in its Lugen-wereld (false world). As the Searuvel shapes and grips our minds, we can no longer freely feel, we cannot see, but as the Searuvel means us to-- we are forlost in its trammels.

But some young minds yet hold enough of what they were at birth, so when they get the Alf-seeding, they hear the Alf-call. And this strengthens the trewth in the marrow of their minds and bones, that lies like a winter-sleeping wight, mayhap, until it is woke. The Sleeper then may feel, though he be wrapped in fogs of sleeping, that something needful is missing, has been lost, or feel the clangor of the Searuvel as harsh and empty of sowel. This comes oftmost at the waking to one's manhood, when the tide of life courses full, and lifted thus, one feels, one sees, one seeks for what has gone lost.

The Deepness then calls--Come back! Come into your own!

And one cannot then but struggle with the wirring (confusing) fogs of the Searuvel, to find one's trew Self, and the trewth of Life. And one becomes a fledgling Kynecht (knight), going into the Deepness on Findal-seech (quest). And if one wins through to the great Finding, where two werelds become One-- Ah! then the Drygand steps forth, with his fellowing Alf-kynechts, Deepsters all!

And then the tale begins.
